Australia's Book Reuse and Recycling Program
Every year around 3.5 million tonnes of paper and cardboard is used in Australia. This is enough to fill 160,000 large semi trailers* – just think how much we could save if the books and educational materials we so often throw out, were reused or read by others?
What is the ReRead Program?
ReRead is a book reuse and recycling program, established by Sustainable Insight, with the key aim to achieve better resource management of books and educational materials. Through this program the public will be able to support donations of books to libraries, schools and charities in desperate need of educational resources. Our site will list places across Australia where you can take your books for donation.
How can books be donated to the program?
To donate your books select the state you live in below and it will direct you to the organisations in your state who would like book donations:
Queensland
New South Wales
Victoria
South Australia
Western Australia
Northern Territory
Australian Capital Territory
Tasmania
What type of books can I donate?
The books required will in some cases vary depending on the organisation, but generally if you have the following books most organisations will welcome:
- Fiction books
- Non-fiction books
- Textbooks
- Children’s storybooks
- Atlases
- Dictionaries/Thesauraus
- Encyclopedias
- Photographic books
If you have any magazines can you please recycle these as most organisations request that magazines not be donated.
Why support this program and the organisations involved?
- It puts into practice the principles of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle by giving individuals and businesses the option for books they don't need, to be reused by others or recycled.
- Provides a source of educational resources for schools, charities and not-for-profit organisations in need of educational resources, including the community organisations involved in supporting the program.
- Provides a way that each person can make a contribution to their community and to help save our environment.
- Some charities will sell donated books to raise funds, which assists them in their work, while providing people with access to second hand books they can enjoy reading.
